As you all know we are a big fan of girl power at Skinniebelle HQ, so over the next few months we are going to be interviewing the coolest chicks in town who are loving life and loving what they do!
Are you ready to get seriously inspired?
To kick of the season we decided to invite super bendy, super happy and super beautiful, Yoga instructor Charlie Morgan into our studio to get a grilling.
Hey Hey Charlie!
☯☯ Apart from being a bad ass unicorn, Charlie Morgan is… ☯☯
Hi, Skinniebelle, thanks for having me I am a London based vinyasa flow yoga instructor and a fashion and yoga accessories designer.
☮☮ Describe a day in the life of Charlie Morgan … ☮☮
Wake up, sit up in bed and meditate for at least 10 minutes. If I’m teaching a morning class then I’ll make myself a quick Nutribullet to go. If I’m not teaching first thing then I’ll do a bit of home yoga practice followed by my favourite Mind Body Bowl granola and a mint tea. Most mornings are spent catching up with emails, planning classes, workshops and retreats. Then, once I have a taught or gone to a lunchtime class and eaten a yummy salad or a wholesome soup, I spend the afternoons at the drawing board, designing or at my sewing machine. If the sun is shining, I’ll always make sure I get outside for at least an hour. I teach most evenings, and when I’m not I’m catching up with friends or going to events.
❤ How do you find creative inspiration? ❤
My creative brain goes into overdrive as soon as I travel. The place I have been most inspired by is India. The energy of the country alone drives me massively, not to mention the abundance of colour everywhere you look and insanely beautiful textiles. Rolling around in fabrics in Rajasthan is my absolute heaven!
✌✌ For those who are new to all this, what is yoga and what is meditation? ✌✌
Yoga is the Sanskrit word for ‘union’: Yoga is a physical practice that unites the mind and the body. Through a series of different postures and with a strong focus on connecting breath and movement, yoga is an incomparable way to calm you down and generally make you feel incredible. Yoga is an ancient tradition, which has been wildly reinvented in the western world. There are now multiple different styles of yoga, which all vary in pace, ambience and outcome. Some people still practice yoga in it’s traditional, spiritual form, others approach it simply from a work-out perspective.
Mediation is an activity that involves sitting still in a cross-legged position, with your eyes closed, your hands on your lap and focusing your attention on the flow of the breath coming in and out of the body. The aim of meditation is to enable you to be with your thoughts, however uncomfortable they may be, and accept them without making any judgement on them. The goal of mediation is to be able to be so accepting of your thoughts, that you can let them go and just simply focus all of your attention on your breathing and nothing else. In other words, you are completely anxious free and calm.
∞ Why is it so important? ∞
Yoga and mediation are so invaluable as they can be such incredible tools in times of need. We are all going to go through times in our lives that are more challenging than others, and we may even get to a point where we don’t even think we can cope. A regular yoga and meditation practice is extremely grounding as it encourages you to be with your feelings as supposed to just supress them. It is super nurturing in every way, shape and form and generally helps puts things into perspective.
☼☼ How did you find yoga or did yoga find you? ☼☼
I quit my office job as a buyer about 4 years ago and decided to go traveling around India. Conscious that I was a few years beyond my gap year, I was determined to plan my trip carefully and not just float around too aimlessly. A friend had recommended I did this 12 day yoga course in the Himalayan Mountains. I signed up to it straight away and before I knew it, I was in the depths of Northern India in an ashram with one of the most inspiring women I have ever met; Ganga, my guru. I took to the course like a duck to water. I cannot even describe how amazing I felt inside and out! During the course I spoke a lot with Ganga and she suggested that I did my training. Six months later, having spent six months in India practicing yoga daily, I completed my 200 teacher training in Bali. The rest is history!
♡ Why do you think so many youngsters are tuning into this way of life? ♡
Because it makes you feel utterly wonderful physically and mentally! There has been such a rise in mental disorders amongst young people over the past decade and I think people are realising that drinking and substance abuse just isn’t an option to help with this anymore. As a result, young people are seeking healthier and more sustainable ways to make themselves feel beautiful and live a life they actually love!
☮ Do you have a personal philosophy? ☮
Your health is your wealth, the rest is a bonus!
✿ You are ALSO a representative for Sweaty Betty. Is there anything you don’t do? How did this come about?
I was very fortunate to be asked to teach a class in one of the boutiques just over a year ago and I really got on with the team in the store. They happened to be looking for a new ambassador at the time, so they suggested that I applied for it. Respectfully, they have quite a stringent application process, so I was so lucky to be asked to represent them. It is such a great way to connect yoga to a much wider and younger audience.
♂ Can you describe your style in three words? ♀
Colourfully, uniquely, bohemian.
♥ What are your top tips to maintaining a happy life? ♥
Meditate as soon as you wake up. Eating a really healthy diet. You literally are what you eat, so if you eat rubbish, you will feel rubbish. Exercise regularly.
Read daily affirmations. Write gratitude lists (especially when you have a bad day). Set goals. Have a vision board with all the things you dream of or would like to achieve and keep it somewhere that you will see it every day. Surroud yourself with people who lift you up and make you smile! Live, love, laugh!
☮ Describe your perfect day… ✌
Although it has taken me a while to get here, it is very similar to the day in the life of me above. The key difference would be that I would wake up by the beach and practice my yoga in an amazing shala looking over the sea!
♫ If you were a song, what song would you be? ♫
The Sunscreen Song , Baz Luhrmann
☯ ✈ And finally, do you have any words of wisdom for our readers?
Life is as beautiful as you make it. Sometimes extraordinary events or people are thrown in our paths, but these are given to us to teach us something we need to know. It’s not always going to be easy, but remember two things: Life begins at the end of your comfort zone and if it doesn’t challenge you, it doesn’t change you!
